Last week we were fortunate enough to get to spend a few days in sunny, Southern California. Specifically, we were there to attend the 2nd Annual StandUp Paddle (SUP) Awards, a yearly event sponsored by SUP magazine. The evening celebrates the year’s greatest SUP achievements and has become the biggest event in StandUp Paddling.

We were invited to attend because our 24-hour Yukon SUP expedition was nominated in the category of Top Expedition of 2012. In June, our good friend Ben Friberg, set a Guinness Book World Record by paddling 238 miles on the Yukon River in a single, 24 hour period. We were right there with him, documenting his world-class expedition for an upcoming film we are producing.

It was quite an honor to be one of the 5 Top Expedition nominees, and really cool to see our work up on the big screen. The aloha-spirit of the event was well worth the trip. In the very laid-back, west coast style, the evening at Casino San Clemente began with an outdoor cocktail ‘hour’ complete with a taco truck and cold beer. The fish tacos were fantastic, and we found ourselves in line chatting to legendary board shaper Ron House! Pipeline Master Gerry Lopez received the lifetime achievement award from the magazine for his involvement in the sport. His acceptance speech was gracious and heartfelt and he could not have been a nicer guy to meet.
